Do people care about music videos anymore?

As we all know, music videos came into prominence in the early 1980's when an upstart cable channel called MTV decided to base it's format around them. In the decades that followed, music videos became a major component to how record labels promoted their artists. I remember in the late 80's how it was a big deal every time a major musician like Madonna or Michael Jackson released a video. They frequently played on network television and more often then not, seemed to court controversy.

When I was growing up, the MTV Video Music awards were a big deal and everyone watched and discussed them. It was also the same time that MTV's Total Request Live became a major television player and dominated MTV's ratings for years.

But now, TRL is a distant memory and the VMA's are a relic of a time long gone; MTV doesn't even play music videos anymore. There are a few artists that are trying to keep the medium relevant, like Lady Gaga and Kanye West, but they are few and far between.

I grew up on music videos and even though they aren't as culturally relevant as they once were, I still find myself interested. I'm always curious to see what the newer school of artists are coming up with from the indie to the mainstream.

Do you care about music videos anymore, did you ever?  What are some of your favorites?

Here is one of my favorite videos of all time:

  1. There are tons of music videos that come out these days. The problem is, very few are remarkable or even memorable. They are definitely some weird ones - like Yeasayer's "Ambling Alp" - definitely worth a watch (and listen! the song rocks)

  2. Yeah, It's definitely rare to find one that is worth the viewing. But occasionally I stumble across a great one and it makes it worth it.

  3. I watched the yeasayer video. Weird. Very "Childhoods End" near the end. I wasn't really feeling it over all though. You told me about another video the other day I think though that was pretty cool. Can't remember it though.

  5. Were you feeling the song, Ambling Alp? Because it is amazing and super catchy. If you can't feel that...

Come on, Fedo, I thought Radiohead mash-ups were below you.

  7. T-Dawg doesn't have cable, but T-Dawg watches a ton of music vids on youtube and vevo. Soundgarden's Black Hole Sun video has always been one of my faves.

  8. Again, ACE, you are ridiculous. It's just as catchy as any Gaga track.

  9. Actually Brett, I just re-listened to it and it is NOT as catchy as any Lady Gaga track. I am still not into it. It's just.... ok. It might even be mildly annoying.
